When a “Joke” Hurts: Understanding Cyberbullying and Choosing Kindness

Tolu posted a simple selfie hoping to connect with classmates. Instead, cruel comments came in waves — a reminder that what looks like a joke online can deeply wound a real person.

When a “Joke” Hurts: Understanding Cyberbullying and Choosing Kindness

She was shy, so she found comfort on social media.

That evening, she posted a selfie, just a simple photo hoping her classmates would see her as friendly, maybe even reach out.

But instead of kind words, the comments came in waves of laughter emojis and cruel remarks:

“See her face!”

“Who told you to post this?”

Tolu cried herself to sleep that night. What her classmates didn't know was how close she came to deleting not just the post, but her account and with it, a piece of her confidence.

Does this sound familiar?

This is cyberbullying.

It may look like “just a joke” to some, but behind every screen is a real person with real emotions. Words typed in seconds can leave scars that last much longer.

The Reality Behind the Screen

Social media has made it easier to connect, share, and express ourselves. But it has also created a space where people sometimes forget there are real humans on the receiving end of their words.

A comment meant to be funny can become deeply hurtful. A quick insult can linger in someone's mind for days, weeks, or even longer.

Before you type, pause and ask yourself: Would I say this if we were face-to-face?

Don't Be the Bully

Kindness is a choice, and it matters more than you think.

Every harsh word leaves a mark.

Every cruel joke carries weight.

You may not see the impact immediately, but it's there.

Kindness, on the other hand, costs nothing, but can mean everything to someone who needs it.

If You're Being Bullied

If you find yourself on the receiving end of hurtful comments or online attacks, you are not alone, and you are not powerless.

  • ✅ Don't fight back with insults. It may feel tempting, but it often makes things worse.
  • ✅ Block and report the bully. Protect your space.
  • ✅ Talk to someone you trust. A parent, teacher, or friend can support you. Seeking help is not weakness, it's wisdom.
  • ✅ Post responsibly. Not every thought or moment needs to be shared online.
  • ✅ Protect your privacy. Share less, stay safer.
  • ✅ Follow positivity. Choose content that uplifts and inspires you.
  • ✅ Take breaks. Your worth is not defined by likes, comments, or followers.

Let's Redefine Social Media

Social media should be a place where we learn, connect, and grow, not a space where people are torn down.

Be the reason someone smiles, not the reason they cry.

Remember: what you put online says more about you than the person you're posting about.

Choose kindness every single time.
