When a Child Speaks: The Cost of Not Listening

Sometimes the difference between safety and harm begins with a simple decision — to listen.

When a Child Speaks: The Cost of Not Listening

“Mum… I need to tell you something.”

Her mother looked up briefly, distracted by the pile of clothes she was folding.

“It is about Uncle John.”

“What about him?”

Her voice trembled.

“He keeps touching me in ways I don't understand. He said I shouldn't tell anyone.”

Her mother froze for a second, then frowned.

“Be careful about what you say. That man has supported this family for years.”

“But Mum, I'm telling you the truth…”

Her mother's expression hardened.

“Enough. Stop saying such things.”

And just like that, a cry for help was dismissed.

When Silence Becomes Harm

We often talk about teenage pregnancy as a result of poor choices. But that is not always the full story.

Sometimes, it is the painful consequence of abuse.

Of fear.

Of silence.

Of adults who choose doubt over protection.

Many children gather courage for days, weeks, even months before speaking up. When they finally do, they are not just sharing words; they are placing their trust in the adult they believe will keep them safe.

What happens when that trust is broken?

The Danger of Dismissing a Child

When a child says they are uncomfortable, it should never be ignored. When they speak about inappropriate touch or behavior, it should never be brushed aside because of who is involved.

Familiar faces can still cause harm.

Trusted individuals can still cross boundaries.

Dismissing a child's voice does not make the problem disappear, it often pushes it deeper into silence, where it can grow and cause even more damage.

Listening Can Save a Future

Teenage pregnancy is not always a matter of “mistakes.” Sometimes, it is the result of situations young people did not choose and could not control.

This is why listening matters.

When a child speaks:

Pay attention.

When they express discomfort:

Take it seriously. Investigate.

When they ask for help:

Protect them without hesitation.

A Responsibility We Cannot Ignore

Believing a child could save their future.

Ignoring them could cost them everything.

As parents, caregivers, and adults in society, we must create environments where children feel safe to speak, and are met with support when they do.

Because sometimes, the difference between safety and harm begins with a simple decision:

To listen.
